Origin Of The Halliday Name

It wouldn't be fair of me to give a history of the family name here, as I haven't done any of the hard work. I will instead list various sources where you may find out that information.

Clan Halliday - Gives an outline of the Halliday history, and other information.
The Halliday Clan - Gives an outline of the Halliday history, and other information.

History Of My Hallidays

This page is the story of my Hallidays, starting with Robert Halliday, and showing all his descendants. If you find the information below confusing, then you can look at My Personal Ancestral File which may (or may not!) make things a bit clearer. All living individuals, or people without a D.O.D, are listed as 'Living', and none of their information is visible. Annoying, isn't it? ;o)

My Family Tree Maker software produces an automated Genealogy Report, which I have copied below, and have added to. All the people mentioned below will eventually have an 'Individual Family File' made about them, which will probably just reproduce all the info below, but will perhaps make it easier to find a particular person. For the protection of any living individuals - all of their details, including their names, will be replaced with 'LIVING'.

You may notice that rather than have addresses where people have been born or died, etc, I have given a name of a place (e.g. Slacks), followed by a 'parish'. This is because only the first line of the address seems to be stated on the relevant certificates - along with whatever parish and shire that the event occured in. All of these events have taken place in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland - unless otherwise stated.

The Story Begins Here.....

Robert Halliday (1777 - 1848) is the earliest Halliday that I have traced back to. It would appear that he and his wife began their life together in New Abbey (or thereabouts) before moving to Slacks Farm in Lochrutton Parish. If you look at the table of their children, you can see that they were all born in New Abbey, with John Halliday being the last in 1816. Their next son, James Halliday, was born in 1818 in Slacks Farm. So I would say that Slacks Farm was procured between 1816 and 1818. I don't know how the Hallidays got Slacks Farm - whether they leased it, then bought it, or bought it outright. I hope to find this out sometime, by going to view the Sasines for the property.

The farm stayed in the Halliday family for at least the next 83 years - I know this as they are in all the censuses from 1841 until 1901.

Descendants of Robert Halliday (1777 - 1848)

GENERATION NO. 1

1. ROBERT HALLIDAY, was born around 1777, and died 11 May 1848 in Slacks Farm in Lochrutton Parish. He was a farmer in Slacks Farm. He is buried in Kirkpatrick Irongray Churchyard in Kirkpatrick Irongray Parish. The only evidence I have about Robert, is the information that is on his gravestone, therefore his cause of death, and the names of his parents are unknown at this point. He married SARAH HALLIDAY 17 Feb 1805 in New Abbey, daughter of ROBERT HALLIDAY (blacksmith) and MARY HALLIDAY. She was born 7 Jun 1781 in Troqueer Parish and died 15 Sep 1855 in Slacks Farm. She is buried in Kirkpatrick Irongray Churchyard. Her cause of death is not known, but was supposed Apoplexy. She was the housekeeper in Slacks Farm. Together, they had 8 children, that I know of. The evidence I have for Sarah is her Death Certificate - interestingly it lists her maiden name as Halliday - and both of her parents surnames are listed as Halliday. It also lists Sarahs children, and their ages.

7. v. WILLIAM GEORGE HALLIDAY, b. 23 Sep 1900, Slacks Farm, Lochrutton.

After 1901 I am not sure what happened to the farm, but I am thinking it was sold on. In the 1901 census, the last family in the farm was Robert Halliday (grandson of the original Robert) and his wife Helen Black, and their 4 sons. Sadly, Robert died a few days before his last son, William George Halliday, was born. This left Helen Black on her own with 4 young boys. It was probably too much of a burden having a farm to look after as well, and I am thinking that she sold it on. I have her next Marriage Certificate, and I do know she got remarried in 1902, and her usual residence was 35 English Street, Dumfries, and she was a Domestic Servant. How this turn of events took place, I do not know - but the farm seems to have been sold between 1901 and 1902.
